Curatorial notes

This delicate, unpainted porcelain basket with reticulated walls was made in Loosdrecht. Look closely at the intricate latticework, where circles intertwine and overlap, reminiscent of patterns found in ancient Celtic knotwork. These endless knots, symbols of eternity and interconnectedness, echo across cultures. We see them in Roman mosaics, medieval manuscripts, and even in the interwoven patterns of Islamic art. Consider how this motif carries a sense of timelessness, representing cycles of life, death, and rebirth. Here, the Loosdrecht artisan has embraced this symbolic power, weaving it into the very structure of the basket. The interconnected circles speak to our deep-seated need for connection, continuity, and the enduring human spirit.
