Curatorial notes

Piero della Francesca painted this Madonna of Mercy in the mid-15th century, and it is now housed in the Museo Civico di Sansepolcro. Here, the Virgin Mary stands protectively, her mantle spread wide to shelter the kneeling figures beneath. This gesture, the “Schutzmantelmadonna,” symbolizes protection and refuge and has roots stretching back to ancient Roman depictions of pietas, or duty. It can be found in countless forms across Europe. Consider how this symbol has evolved: from ancient statues of emperors offering protection, to medieval reliquaries shaped like sheltering cloaks. The act of seeking shelter echoes our deepest fears and hopes, representing the subconscious desire for safety and the hope that we will be watched over by a higher power. This image taps into a primal need for safety, protection, and the deep, comforting embrace of a mother figure, a timeless, cyclical symbol of solace across cultures.
