This fashion plate, Très Parisien, 1927 No. 3, Pl. 3: Modèles des TISSUS D'ART - Ces robes décorées (…), was made by G-P. Joumard around 1927 using line drawing. The hand here is precise, but also playful, like when you try to look sophisticated but can’t help smiling. I love how the artist treats the lines of the dresses, the way they dance and flutter, as though they’re about to float off the page. Notice how the artist uses floral decorations to frame the necklines and hems. The flowers are a kind of language here, they have such a delicate touch. The artist really goes all in on the texture, turning the dresses into gardens of delicate lines. For me, the real magic is the way Joumard finds a balance between precision and the unpredictable nature of the line. This echoes the work of Erté, who also had a background in fashion design and brought that eye for detail to his graphic work. But in the end, the ambiguity of the artwork is its strength.
