Curatorial notes

This is a photograph of Herengracht near Herenstraat in Amsterdam, taken by Pieter Oosterhuis. The photograph captures a tranquil, almost melancholic scene of one of Amsterdam’s main canals. Oosterhuis, a pioneer in Dutch photography, lived through a time of significant social change. With his work, we can consider the rise of the middle class, urbanization, and industrialization that transformed European cities. The tree-lined canal, reflecting on the surface of the water, evokes a sense of order and prosperity. Yet, this calm facade obscures the complex social realities of 19th-century Amsterdam, characterized by stark class divisions. The grand canal houses were inhabited by the wealthy elite while, just behind these, the working class lived in crowded and often unsanitary conditions. Oosterhuis doesn’t explicitly depict these disparities, but his choice to focus on the serene beauty of the canal invites us to reflect on the layers of history and human experience embedded within the urban landscape.
