Curatorial notes

This is Pablo Picasso's 'Women in the Loge,' painted with oil on canvas, and it's all about the energy of making. The thick brushstrokes, especially in the woman's elaborate hat, show Picasso working and reworking the image, building it up layer by layer. It’s like a dance between the artist and the canvas. Look at the way he uses blues and yellows, not to describe the scene realistically, but to create a mood, an atmosphere. The colors feel almost electric. There’s a tension between the woman’s face, which is quite detailed, and the more abstract brushwork around her. It's as if Picasso is asking us, how much information do we really need to see something? It reminds me a bit of Van Gogh's portraits, but with a raw, restless edge that’s all Picasso. Ultimately, this painting is less about what it depicts and more about the act of seeing itself.
