Childe Hassam made this painting of the Isle of Shoals using oil paints, and you can tell he was really working the surface! Look at how the paint is applied, thick and juicy, creating texture that almost makes you want to reach out and touch it. The strokes are these separate little gestures, like dabs and dashes, that somehow come together to form this scene. I love how he captures the way light dances on the water and rocks, with all those warm yellows and oranges contrasting against the cool blues and greens. There's this one spot, right where the rocks meet the water, where he's layered these fiery colors, and it just glows. It's like he's not just painting what he sees, but also how he feels about being there, capturing the energy of the place. I am reminded of Van Gogh with the expressive way he handles the paint, turning a simple scene into something that feels alive and immediate. Art's an ongoing conversation, right?
