This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, shows Isabel Wachenheimer in her KLM uniform, standing on the steps of a KLM plane with David-Zvi Pinkas. It's a black and white image, a study in greys, but it's full of information. I love how the light falls on the surfaces, creating a range of tones from the bright sky to the darker shadows. It’s like a masterclass in tonal variation. It makes me think about the idea of capturing a moment, a process of freezing time, and all the decisions that go into framing and capturing this image. I look at the shadows under the noses of the people at the front of the image and I think that this is how this work is made. There’s a formal quality to the composition. The figures are arranged in such a way that your eye is drawn from one point to another. It almost reminds me of a painting by Gerhard Richter in how the process of layering information together to create an image reveals itself. It’s a conversation between art and life, always asking questions.
