Cindy Sherman made this photographic print, Untitled #488, as part of a long, ongoing, and deeply considered process of artmaking. The monochrome palette might initially seem restrictive, but it's within this self-imposed limitation that Sherman’s ideas really start to fizz. Look closely at the way she has repeated the figures, creating a kind of fractured rhythm across the surface. The repetition of the women creates a kind of unsettling feeling. It’s almost like a chorus line where everyone’s slightly out of step. Think about some of Warhol’s multiples, like the soup cans or the Marilyns, but Sherman digs into something deeper, something about identity and repetition. The photograph feels like a conversation, or an argument, about what it means to be seen and to see. Ultimately, it’s open to endless interpretations. That’s the power of art, right?
