Meret Oppenheim made this pair of gloves, and they are definitely something to look at! They’re gloves, sure, but it’s the red veins painted on them that really grab you; it’s like she’s turned the inside out. The texture and color create this incredible feeling, a mix of soft leather and stark biological reality. You can almost feel the cool, smooth surface of the glove against your skin, while your mind wrestles with the image of veins just beneath. Look at how the lines branch out, mirroring the network inside our own bodies. It reminds me of Louise Bourgeois, she really knew how to get under your skin. Oppenheim’s gloves invite you to think about what it means to be human, to feel, to be vulnerable. They're a reminder that art can be both beautiful and deeply unsettling, provoking us to see the world in new, unexpected ways.
