This etching by Sébastien Leclerc I, presents the dispersion and convergence of light rays on the retina. Consider the radiant sun, positioned at the apex, labeled 'A', its rays extending outward, a symbol deeply rooted in human consciousness, representing enlightenment, truth and the divine source of life. The eye, receiving these rays, acts as a lens, in a manner reminiscent of the all-seeing eye, a motif found in ancient Egyptian art and Freemasonry. Here, however, its appearance is scientific, devoid of overt religious connotations, yet subtly resonating with the motif’s ancient power. The convergence point on the retina evokes the idea of a singular truth, an objective reality perceived through the physical organ of sight. Leclerc's geometric depiction mirrors the sacred geometry found in Renaissance art, where mathematical precision was equated with divine order. The emotional power of such imagery lies in its ability to invoke a sense of cosmic harmony, engaging the viewer's subconscious with archetypal symbols, bridging the gap between science and the spiritual realm, illustrating the perpetual cycle of discovery.
