Julie de Graag created this study sheet with geese, now at the Rijksmuseum, using a pencil. Notice the pale grey background, against which the delicate pencil lines articulate various poses of geese. These sketches capture the essence of the birds in simple yet expressive forms, conveying a sense of movement and life. De Graag’s careful attention to form is evident in the rhythmic arrangements of the geese across the sheet. The interplay of lines creates depth, while the varied shapes and forms—some standing tall, others preening—reveal a sophisticated understanding of animal anatomy. The composition, while seemingly informal, is deliberately structured to engage the viewer. The work invites a semiotic interpretation. The geese, rendered with such precision, act as signs, symbolizing the natural world. Each line and curve is imbued with meaning, reflecting De Graag's formalist approach. The piece also challenges fixed perspectives. Rather, it encourages an exploration of the endless possibilities within the natural world.
