This drawing was done by Niels Larsen Stevns, we don’t know when exactly, with a humble pencil. It’s a double page of sketches and notes. Look at the way the marks are laid down, almost tentatively. I imagine the artist trying to work something out, rubbing out and redrawing. There's no preciousness here, just the honest labor of finding a form. The paper itself is stained and worn, it adds to the sense of intimacy, like a peek into the artist's private world. It's a real working document, not a finished piece. There's something beautiful about that, the process laid bare for us to see. You can see similar approaches in the work of Paula Modersohn-Becker, who also captured the fleeting nature of the human form with sensitivity. Art isn't just about perfect images; it's about the journey, the questions, and the conversations we have along the way.
