Editor: Here we have Giuseppe Barberis’ “Il Broletto Colla Torre Del Popolo,” created in 1897, rendered in what appears to be pen and ink. It depicts a rather austere-looking tower and building. It feels very...stark. What stands out to you in this piece? Curator: I'm immediately struck by the tower itself. It acts as a kind of visual anchor. Consider the phallic symbolism so often attributed to towers, pillars, obelisks -- what does that visual assertion of power communicate to you in the context of, say, civic identity or even masculinity at the fin de siècle? Editor: I see what you mean, the tower dominating the surrounding architecture gives it that powerful vibe. And being a "tower of the people," does that imply it was a symbol intended for public good, even as it holds a potentially aggressive symbolic meaning? Curator: Precisely! Think of the tower as a cultural symbol. These towers frequently function as landmarks. They root communities in shared experience and even memory. Consider how often civic unrest revolves around such prominent features. Destroying them is to tear down a shared history, a shared identity. The question becomes: what collective identity was Barberis intending to represent here, and for what audience? Editor: It’s like Barberis captured a specific moment, but also the weight of history and the potential for future conflicts within the built environment. That makes you wonder about the artist's viewpoint. Curator: Indeed. And does the printmaking medium amplify that, democratizing the image? Were such prints commonly displayed or collected at the time? It moves the artwork into a new dimension. Editor: So much to consider. I hadn't really thought about the print itself being part of the message! I’ll never look at cityscapes the same way.
