Knackstedt & Näther made this picture of a crowd of people on the beach in Zandvoort, and it’s like stepping back in time. Look at the muted, sepia tones, almost like the whole scene is dipped in tea. It’s got that dreamy quality, where the details soften and blend. The surface of this photograph has a beautiful texture. See how the light catches on the people and the water, kind of grainy and alive. I love how the crowd seems to go on forever, their figures blurring into a mass of hats and coats. It's not about perfect clarity here, but more about the overall feel of the day. I wonder if it was sunny or overcast. It reminds me a little of some of Gerhard Richter's blurred photos; they both capture a sense of something fleeting. The edges are soft, the focus isn't sharp, but there’s a real feeling of a moment lived, like we were there, too.
