Curator: What jumps out at me is not so much the realism itself, but the industrial forces that allowed for its mass production and dissemination. Consider the Carrara marble, the technological advancements in extraction and carving that fueled this neoclassicist trend of portraiture. Editor: I hadn't really considered the industrial aspect. Are you saying the materials themselves carry as much significance as the subject matter? Curator: Absolutely! The means of production shaped what art could be made and who could afford to have their likeness immortalized this way. A bust like this, produced for a wealthy patron, serves as both a symbol of status and the embodiment of the 19th-century's faith in technological progress. Do you think about the labor of extracting and sculpting it? Editor: I guess I’m more used to thinking of it in terms of ‘artist genius’ and that kind of thing. It’s definitely a perspective shift to think about who actually quarried the marble and the economics behind its existence. Curator: Precisely. Seeing this sculpture as a material object embedded in a system of labor and consumption gives us a far richer understanding than simply admiring its surface representation.
