Annotaties en een gezicht op gebouwen, mogelijk in Amsterdam 1886 - 1908

This is a page of annotations and a sketch of buildings, possibly in Amsterdam, by George Hendrik Breitner. Though undated, Breitner was active in the Netherlands from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Breitner was known for his interest in depicting the working class and urban life. This sketch gives insight into his process and preoccupation with capturing the everyday world around him. The hurried lines and barely legible notes provide clues about his attention to scale, proportion, and detail. The use of sketchbooks like this allowed artists to explore themes related to identity, gender, and class. Breitner, for example, also engaged in street photography and his paintings often explored working-class women. The sketch seems like a fleeting impression. With its quick notations and measurements, it offers a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the artist's creative process.
