This list, drawn from Philip Zilcken's archive, offers us a glimpse into the world of the late 19th century. The handwritten notes, filled with names of places, and various expenses, speak to the burgeoning world of travel. Note how place names are more than mere geographical markers; they evoke a network of cultural and artistic associations, revealing the desires and aspirations of the traveller. Holland, Venice, Bavaria and other places, become containers of cultural memory, sparking a range of emotions in those who read or hear them. This resonates with the phenomenon that I call the "survival of the antique." As we see in Renaissance art, classical motifs resurface in new contexts, charged with fresh emotional intensity. This list does something similar, calling on long-standing cultural associations which are resurrected and reshaped by individual experience. In this way, Zilcken's list becomes more than a record, it is a portal, inviting us to wander through the layers of time and memory.
