This snapshot, taken by an unknown photographer, shows German Luftwaffe soldiers with nurses. What strikes me most is the arrangement of open windows, like little portals. Each one offering a slightly different view, a variation on the same scene. They are like open mouths, telling the story of those inside, while framing a particular perspective of the outside. There is something so deliberate about their placement, creating a kind of rhythm across the facade. The windows mirror, too, the composition of the patients in their beds, each reclined at a different angle, telling their own story of recovery. It reminds me of the work of Gerhard Richter, his own use of photography as source material, and how he explored the ways in which images shape our perceptions of reality. Here, the photographer has created a moment that suggests multiple possibilities.
