This page of sketches and notes was made by Niels Larsen Stevns, and holds copies after early Christian mosaics. Stevns uses a limited palette, and his mark-making is direct. Look at how the texture of the paper interacts with the watercolor washes. See how the colours bleed and pool, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere? It’s like watching paint have a conversation with the paper. I’m drawn to the small circular mosaic copy. The colours are muted, the figures are simplified, and the overall effect is one of quiet reverence. The mosaic is encircled by a thin green ring, like an aura. It's interesting how the artist doesn’t try to conceal his working process; instead, he allows it to remain visible, inviting us to witness the act of creation itself. Stevns work puts me in mind of the drawings of Phillip Guston, he also allowed his process to remain visible. Ultimately, art embraces ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations rather than fixed meanings.
