Curatorial notes

Niko Pirosmani, a Georgian self-taught painter, made this Roe Deer Fawn using oil on oilcloth. Pirosmani often employed inexpensive industrial materials like oilcloth, a practical choice reflecting his economic circumstances and perhaps also the culture he depicted: everyday life in Tbilisi, Georgia. The deep black background, achieved with simple pigments, enhances the fawn's reddish-brown coat, while the minimal brushwork creates flat, graphic shapes. Pirosmani’s technique involved layering paint directly onto the oilcloth, allowing the material's texture to show through. This direct approach contrasts sharply with academic painting of the time, but aligns with other self-taught artists who developed resourceful methods in the absence of formal training. The painting’s directness and simplicity, combined with its unusual support material, challenges traditional distinctions between art and craft, inviting us to appreciate the beauty found in resourceful making.
