Fusión 2014

Requena Nozal created this painting, Fusión, using broad sweeping gestures of dark blue and black across a vibrant red canvas. I like to think about the act of painting itself—the way it comes into being, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. The artist’s hand moved across the canvas in a dance of color and form. I imagine Nozal contemplating the canvas, lost in thought as they built up this composition. It reminds me of Kline or Motherwell. I wonder whether they, like Nozal, felt the weight and excitement of engaging with the vast history of painting, as they grappled with the present moment. Look at that dark jagged line, splitting the red ground. See how the texture and color creates so much feeling? The physicality of the paint, thick in some areas and thin in others, shapes our experience of the painting, filling it with emotion and intellectual energy. Artists are always in conversation, sharing ideas across time and space, inspiring one another's creativity. Painting is embodied expression, embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing multiple interpretations rather than one fixed meaning.
