Jean Charles Delafosse created this print, "Herinnering en Overvloed", or "Memory and Abundance", sometime in the 1700s. The print presents us with two distinct themes: memory and abundance, each explored through a rich tapestry of classical symbols. Look at the upper image that is framed with a rich garland. Within it, we see symbols of the Roman god Janus, whose two faces represent the ability to look to both the past and the future. Below it, the sacrificial altar relates to the stories of the Bible. Below, we see the Goddess Minerva framed by a cornucopia of fruit, symbols of prosperity and plenty. Delafosse's work invites us to reflect on the values of the Enlightenment, where the past was looked to as inspiration for a rich and abundant future. Through careful historical research, we can unravel the complex web of meaning woven into this print, a reminder of art's power to embody and shape cultural values.
