Curatorial notes

Editor: Here we have an early photograph by John Adams Whipple, of a chap named Winslow Warren in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It’s dreamy, almost like a memory. What jumps out at you? Curator: That oval frame feels so intimate, doesn't it? Like peering into someone's past. It’s as if Whipple is not just capturing a likeness, but a whisper of a life. What do you feel when you look at his eyes? Editor: A little bit of melancholy, maybe? Like he's seen things. I guess photography was a pretty big deal back then, right? Curator: Absolutely, imagine the sitter’s wonder at seeing themselves rendered with such accuracy. These early photographs were like holding a piece of time in your hands. It’s amazing! Editor: Yeah, a time capsule, in a way. I'll never look at old photos the same way again. Curator: Exactly, it is like poetry.
