"Gezicht", or "Seeing" was created by Alexander van Haecken using an engraving technique in the 18th century. This piece encapsulates the rococo era's fascination with beauty and the female form. During this time, the objectification and idealization of women in art were common, often portraying them in passive roles. This engraving does not escape that phenomenon, as it is centered on a fair-skinned woman, half-dressed, adorning herself with pearls before a mirror. The artistic style reflects the prevailing social values of the time, where a woman's worth was often tied to her appearance and social status. It presents an intimate, yet objectified view of a woman engaged in beautification. The mirror acts as a reflection not just of the woman's physical appearance, but also of the societal expectations placed upon her. "Seeing" prompts us to consider how representations of women in art have historically reinforced, and, at times, challenged gender norms. While the woman is an active participant in her adornment, she is also passively conforming to societal standards of beauty, an issue that continues to resonate today.
