Sol LeWitt made this structuralist sculpture, "9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Half Off," out of open white cubes. I love it! I imagine Sol methodically constructing each module, stacking them with mathematical precision. Did he start at the top and work his way down, like a reverse countdown? Or was it built from the bottom up, like a tower reaching for the sky? I see the ghost of Agnes Martin in this. The thing about Sol is that even in its minimalism, you can still see the artist thinking. This work makes me consider painting's architecture: how repeated gestures create form, how simple shapes can build complex systems. You can almost see the artist moving, adding unit by unit, marking time and space. Artists engage in this unspoken dialogue, constantly riffing off each other, building on what came before, and pushing the boundaries of what art can be. LeWitt prompts us to see structure, pattern, and the beauty in simplicity.
