Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst designed this carpet for the windows in the North transept of the Dom Church in Utrecht. The drawing employs a formal arrangement of verticality and repetition. Vertical black bars segment the image into four columns, creating a stark rhythm. Within each of these vertical segments, the artist repeats a pattern of linear abstraction. The ochre background is overlaid with what appears to be a series of interlocking geometric forms outlined in black. These forms seem to mimic the look of stained glass, with leading separating the panes. Roland Holst has used a structured, almost mathematical approach to design. The effect is one of complex harmony, where the interplay between light and dark, and geometric and organic, offers a fascinating visual dynamic. Its semiotic representation draws from a shared cultural vocabulary of the church, the divine and geometric abstraction.
