Isaac de Moucheron created this landscape with figures in a sloop using etching. Dominating the scene are the embracing trees and their gestures, evocative of the figures in classical paintings enacting moments of grief or revelation. The image brings to mind similar compositions in antiquity, in which the landscape plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative. Here, the trees frame the scene, drawing our eyes towards the distant architecture. But these trees –reaching across the plane of the image – are almost human in their posture. Consider how often in art, a tree marks a significant moment, a silent witness to human drama. Perhaps such a vision taps into our collective unconscious, a deep-seated memory of nature as both a provider and a stage for our lives. Landscape, architecture, and human drama are interconnected, echoing through time.
