Carel Frederik Bendorp created this print called ‘Gezicht op Amersfoort’ using etching and watercolour. Bendorp lived in a time of shifting social structures, when the Dutch Republic was in decline, and there was a growing sense of national identity. This picturesque scene, depicting everyday life along the river, invites us to consider the historical and social contexts that shaped the lives of the people represented. The figures in the boats and along the riverbank embody a burgeoning middle class and a world where life was dominated by mercantile and trade activities. The serene surface, however, obscures the labor and the complex power dynamics inherent in this society. The print, with its delicate lines and soft colours, romanticizes the landscape, yet it also reminds us to consider whose stories are being told, and from whose perspective. As you reflect on this vista, consider the interplay between the personal and the political, the visible and the hidden. How do we see ourselves reflected in these historical landscapes?
