Curatorial notes

Camille Pissarro, who was born in 1830 on the island of St. Thomas, painted ‘Farm at Montfoucault’ using oil on canvas. Pissarro, of Jewish-French descent, provides an emotionally rich and affectionate portrayal of rural life. The artwork captures a humble scene: a woman, bent over with labor, gathers kindling; geese waddle across the farmyard. This evokes a sense of tranquility and simple beauty. Pissarro was deeply interested in representing the lives of the working class. He sought to depict the dignity and value of their labor, at a time when the Industrial Revolution was causing massive social upheaval. His artistic vision aligned with his anarchist beliefs. This painting invites us to reflect on the relationship between humanity and nature, the value of labor, and the beauty of the everyday. It’s an intimate glimpse into a world that was rapidly changing, a world Pissarro sought to preserve through his art.
