Alexander Calder animated steel into new shapes and forms. Just look at this sculpture! It's like a balancing act of color, line, and form. I can almost see Calder in his studio, bending and welding metal, pushing the material to its limits. The flat planes of bright red, black, and blue—each seems to float in space, connected yet independent. What I love about Calder is his playful approach to materiality, which makes me think of my own process. The solid forms, while fixed, seem like a snapshot of movement, like dancers caught mid-pose. The juxtaposition of colors and shapes creates a dynamic tension that is both visually stimulating and emotionally engaging. Calder, like so many artists, speaks to us across time through sculpture and painting. It’s through making that we learn, and keep the conversation going.
