Alfred Freddy Krupa made this pastel drawing, Flood pool at Gažansko field, on the 29th of May, 2015. The vertical marks work hard to describe an environment. It feels like the essence of this place, done quickly, in the moment. I love the way the color shifts; blue above, reflecting in the water, with the yellow and orange tones of the land in between. You can almost feel the dampness and the humidity, can’t you? The pastel sits on the paper, a dry, chalky medium. It's not about hiding the process. You can see each stroke, each decision. Look at the way the marks become denser toward the bottom, grounding the composition, while the upper portion feels lighter, more atmospheric. It reminds me a little of some of those quick plein air sketches by the Impressionists, like maybe a Boudin seascape. But without the weight of expectation. Like both, this feels very personal and real, a fleeting moment captured with simple means. A conversation with nature, unfiltered and true.
