Paul Jacoulet made this image of a Chinese Beauty with a gentle touch and an eye for subtle harmonies. You can almost feel him considering each delicate line, each soft wash of color, as he built up the image. I imagine Jacoulet carefully layering each block print with a sense of quiet reverence, really attentive to the textures and patterns. I wonder if he saw his own image in the face of his subject, both of them peering through a veil of cultural exchange and artistic interpretation. The butterflies on her kimono are a delicate counterpoint to the peony behind her fan – it feels like he is trying to conjure a shared sense of beauty through the act of seeing and making. It makes me think about how art can transcend boundaries and build connections across time, and how each artist brings their own unique lens to the ongoing conversation.
