Curatorial notes

Nicaise de Ruyter created this allegory on music as an engraving sometime in the late 17th century. The image shows a female figure, likely a muse, seated with a triangle in her hand. She is framed by architectural elements on the left and nature on the right, where putti dance in a ring. Made in the Netherlands, this allegory reflects the cultural values of the Dutch Golden Age. Music and art were seen as civilizing influences, but also as sources of pleasure and social cohesion. The print may have served as a decoration in a well-to-do home or even as an illustration in a book on the arts. As historians, we use archives, libraries, and digital resources to understand the social and intellectual contexts in which works like these were created. Considering art as deeply embedded in its time allows us to better understand the values and ideologies of the past.
