Here is a model of a koff, made by an anonymous artist. These types of ships, common in the 18th and 19th centuries, weren't just modes of transport; they were floating communities, embodying the complexities of maritime life. The model invites us to reflect on the lives intertwined with these vessels, from the skilled craftsmen who built them to the sailors who braved the seas. Consider the social hierarchies onboard, where class distinctions played out in the cramped quarters below deck. Think about the absence of women and the ever-present dangers faced by those who risked their lives in pursuit of trade and exploration. This model serves as a reminder of the human stories, both triumphant and tragic, that are woven into the history of maritime exploration and trade. It embodies labor, adventure, and the relentless pursuit of progress, all within the confines of its wooden frame.

The Department of the Navy not only had scale models made as part of the design process of new ships, it also collected models of existing ship types. This model was bought together with five others at an auction in 1865. The koff was a small cargo vessel that plied the coastal waters of Europe.
