I imagine Tadeusz Makowski making "Music Performance" with brushes loaded with muted browns and geometric forms, probably in a light-filled studio somewhere. Look at the painting’s surface, how the paint is thick, almost sculptural in places. The artist clearly had an interest in structure, breaking down these figures into geometric blocks, like a cubist experiment. It’s like he's building up the image, piece by piece. And those eyeglasses! Each face rendered with a quiet, dignified expression behind those lenses. I wonder if Makowski was thinking about community, about how music brings people together? Or was he more intrigued by the visual rhythm of the scene, the way the shapes and colors play off each other? The figures are placed close together and the palette is warm and inviting. It reminds me of Picasso and Léger, of course, but there is something so personal and endearing about it. Ultimately, it's this dialogue, this back-and-forth across time, that keeps painting alive.
