This is a pencil sketch of an embracing couple and some birds by Niels Larsen Stevns. The lines are light, tentative, like he's feeling his way through the forms. I can imagine Stevns in his studio, sketchbook open, trying to capture a fleeting moment of intimacy or the delicate curve of a bird's wing. The embrace is tender, the figures intertwined with simple lines. It reminds me of Matisse, the way he could suggest so much with so little. The birds, too, feel like they’re caught in motion, about to take flight. There’s a vulnerability in these sketches. It is like we're looking at the artist's private thoughts, his way of seeing the world distilled into a few marks on paper. It feels like a conversation between artists across time, a shared language of line and form. And what’s more beautiful than that?
