Janos Mattis-Teutsch painted this vision of his Birthplace with oil on canvas, we don't know exactly when. The painting feels like a memory. See how the brushstrokes aren't trying to mimic reality, but instead capture the feeling of a place. The colour palette is really interesting. It feels both grounded and dreamlike. Look at how the greens and yellows pop against the pastel pinks and blues. There's a tension between the flatness of the picture plane and the illusion of depth created by the arrangement of shapes and colours. The paint seems applied in small, deliberate dabs and strokes. Notice the pink tree trunks, and the way the yellow blobs define the foliage. It's as if each mark is a building block in a mosaic of memory. Looking at the mark making here, I can't help but think of other artists like Bonnard who were also interested in the everyday and the domestic but used colour and light to create these poetic and evocative paintings.
