About this artwork
Editor: This X-radiograph of Poussin's "Holy Family" reveals so much about the underlying structure. What do you see in this image beyond just the figures, in terms of the materials used to create the original painting? Curator: The X-radiograph allows us to consider the canvas itself, the weave and texture, as crucial to Poussin's process. We are getting at the means of production. How did the artist's studio or available materials influence the final form? Editor: It’s fascinating to think about those limitations and choices, isn't it? The materiality really shifts my perspective. Curator: Exactly! It challenges the idea of the artist as purely a creator of ideas. We see labor, materiality, and, perhaps, the social context of art-making.
