This document, "Tekst over Trijn van Leemput en de slechting van kasteel Vredenburg, 1577," was made by an anonymous author using iron gall ink on paper. The material is quite simple. Paper as a cheap, widely available writing surface and iron gall ink that could be produced with relatively simple means. The ink itself, made from iron salts, tannin, and a binder, shows incredible stability on the paper. The social significance lies in the readability of the writing. This document provides a written account of events surrounding Trijn van Leemput and the demolition of Vredenburg Castle in 1577. The choice of these materials reflects a practical and accessible means of documentation during that time. The labor would have been mostly focused on the making of ink and the skill in handwriting. The cultural and historical context is of course everything, and by keeping the document, we too are part of that history. Considering the role of materials, processes, and social context, one can gain deeper insights into the cultural and historical relevance of such seemingly simple artifacts.
