Alexander Ivanov painted these Pontian Swamps in the mid-19th century, using oil on canvas. The Pontian Marshes, as they are also known, are found in Italy south of Rome. Ivanov spent much of his working life in Italy. He was of course Russian, and like many artists of the period, found himself drawn to the classical world. Italy was also a popular destination for aristocrats undertaking the ‘Grand Tour.’ We might understand Ivanov’s works in light of this cultural trend. The artist’s later career saw him occupied with religious painting. He believed that art had a spiritual and moral role to play in society. He may well have seen the Italian landscape as having a particular historical resonance. Art historians explore themes and ideas like this by studying letters, diaries, and travel journals of the time, or other literature such as guidebooks. What did it mean to be an artist in the 19th century, and what did art mean to society? These are the questions that continue to animate our understanding of art’s important place in the modern world.
