Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this notebook page with pencil; it’s called "Notities en berekeningen," which means notes and calculations. I imagine Lion Cachet hunched over this page, maybe in a chilly studio, working out sums. Look at those looping lines of script, the ghost of "myself" hovering – was he thinking about identity while doing his accounts? The thing about works on paper is the intimacy, right? It's so immediate and so close to the hand. You can feel Lion Cachet’s presence. The graphite looks soft, like a whisper, and there’s a real directness, like he’s speaking to himself – and to us. He’s including us in his work, his life. This page echoes so many artists’ notebooks and journals through time. Think of Leonardo’s notebooks, filled with studies and ideas – it's a reminder of how art and life are so intertwined. Artists learn from each other, riff on each other’s ideas, and keep the conversation going.
