Pieter de Keen crafted this silver candlestick with a baluster stem and square base sometime between 1659 and 1747. Note the way the highly polished silver surface reflects light, creating a play of luminous patterns that define its form. The candlestick has a solid geometric structure that rises with elegant symmetry. Keen combines square and rounded shapes in the base, stem and socket. This geometric organization provides a rational framework. Yet, Keen has softened the angularity through beveled edges and subtly curved contours. The polished silver material further dissolves the structural rigidity, giving it a fluid, almost ethereal quality. Consider how such a functional object transcends its utility. The candlestick invites us to appreciate its formal composition and the way it embodies a certain cultural ideal. It is not just an object but a carefully constructed aesthetic statement.
