This is César de Cock’s "Heuvellandschap met bebossing en twee figuren," an undated print. The image is dominated by a tonal range that evokes a certain melancholy, with intricate lines creating texture that draws the eye across the landscape. De Cock's strategic use of light and shadow divides the composition. The foreground, rendered with denser marks, emphasizes the rugged terrain while the lighter background alludes to distant expanses. This contrast creates spatial depth, inviting the viewer to reflect on the relationship between near and far, known and unknown. The two figures are positioned along the lower portion of the print and seem absorbed by the magnitude of their environment. De Cock uses line to not only depict landscape but also to evoke a sense of introspection that hints at existential themes of human existence within nature. He uses signs and structures to create visual form, and cultural meaning.
