This is the title page of Finska konstnärer, or Finnish Artists, made by Rafael Hertzberg and published in 1893. The ornate typography and framing are typical of the late 19th century and suggest an attempt to present the contents, Finnish artists, as refined and cultured. Note how the easel takes centre stage in the design, a signal perhaps of the increased professionalization of artists in Finland at this time. Also, the book was produced during a time when Finland was an autonomous part of the Russian Empire. Cultural production, such as this book, was one way to assert a separate Finnish identity. As art historians, we can contextualize this image by looking at the history of art institutions in Finland during this period and studying the biographies of the artists included in the book. Understanding the social and political context can reveal how art shapes and reflects cultural identity.
