Marc Chagall made this etching, “The Fox and the Bust,” using dark, concentrated lines, hatched and cross-hatched. You can imagine the artist’s hand moving across the plate, guided by intuition, building up layer upon layer of marks. I wonder what Chagall was thinking as he created this print. What was it like to work with such limited means to create such atmosphere and feeling? The lines are so delicate, yet they convey such a strong sense of movement and energy. It reminds me of the prints of other artists like Paula Rego or even Goya. Look at how he uses the texture of the lines to create a sense of depth and shadow. The fox seems to be emerging from the darkness, while the bust stands bathed in light. The act of creation, with its endless possibilities, is like a conversation between artists across time. Each one building on the work of those who came before, and inspiring those who will come after.
