Curatorial notes

This is Sketchbook XI with 30 sheets, made by Isaac Israels. Israels was a Dutch painter, a part of the Amsterdam Impressionism movement. Amsterdam Impressionism emerged in the late 19th century, a period marked by rapid social and economic change, and growing urbanisation. This context shaped the movement’s focus on everyday life, capturing fleeting moments and the atmosphere of the city. Israels, like other Amsterdam Impressionists, was interested in portraying the lives of ordinary people, often depicting scenes of working-class neighborhoods, street life, and the fashion world. Within this sketchbook, we can look for what interested Israels, what he chose to capture. What people did he draw? How did he approach his subjects, and how can we use this sketchbook to try and understand who Israels was and what he cared about? These sketches represent snapshots of a world in transition. It's hard not to wonder about the stories behind each sketch.
