Frank Gray made this "Miniature Chest" with what looks like gouache or watercolor on paper, and right away I’m struck by its domesticity. The piece has a kind of earnestness, maybe because the colors are so warm and inviting. I can almost smell the wood! It seems Gray wasn’t trying to hide his process; the marks are clear, almost diagrammatic. I keep coming back to the lower left door, where the lines waver a little, giving it this wonderfully human quality. It’s like he paused there, considering the weight and feel of the thing he was painting. There’s a connection here to someone like Fairfield Porter, who also found profound beauty in everyday scenes. Both artists remind us that art doesn't always need to shout, sometimes it can whisper, inviting us to look closer at the quiet corners of our lives.
