Abraham Lion Zeelander made this chalk drawing of a standing male nude in 1808. Zeelander was a Dutch artist and this drawing won third prize. The piece embodies academic artistic conventions of the period. Artists in schools were encouraged to study the male nude, to then be able to create depictions of biblical or mythological heroes. This particular example may have been intended as an exercise in classical contrapposto, the pose of the body in which one part is twisted in opposition to another part. We can see that Zeelander is engaging with an established artistic practice and a prescribed system of learning. To understand the significance of the artwork, we can investigate the curriculum of the art school, the social status of artists, and the expectations of patrons and audiences. By studying these aspects, we can gain a deeper understanding of its cultural and historical context. Art is always contingent on these surrounding conditions.
