This is Richter’s "3.3.85," an abstract piece created with oil paint. Observe the stark contrast between vibrant colors, such as the dominating blue and yellow, juxtaposed with muted greys. The grey brushstrokes resemble, in my mind, the recurring motif of the “wandering soul." In ancient Greek vase paintings, one might find similar wispy figures representing souls departing from the body, adrift between worlds. The linear quality of these shapes echoes the movement and form, reflecting a similar sense of transition or transcendence. Throughout the ages, we see this form reappear, morphing from religious iconography to secular art. The emotional resonance remains, tapping into our collective subconscious, evoking feelings of melancholy, longing, and the ineffable mysteries of existence. These forms, like echoes, reverberate across time. Each iteration carries the weight of its past, yet adapts to new cultural landscapes. This cycle continues, always returning, always transforming, always engaging us in its timeless dance.
