Editor: This is the Asper of Manuel I of Trebizond, a coin made of metal. The details are worn, but I can still make out figures and patterns. What do you see in the composition of this piece? Curator: Note how the circular form dictates the internal organization. Figures are arranged to conform to this geometry. Observe the incised lines; they delineate form, but also create texture. The overall effect is one of constrained power. Do you perceive the intentionality in the design? Editor: I do see how the form and line work together. It’s fascinating how much expression can be achieved within such a small space! Thanks for pointing that out. Curator: Indeed, the very limitations of the medium contribute to its potency. A valuable lesson for any artist.
